What is this?

In 2020, building on the success of the CREOGs Over Coffee OB/GYN podcast, a group of rising PGY-1s to the University of Michigan created a social media-driven #OBGynInternChallenge in their own thirst for knowledge prior to starting residency. It proved popular to their rising co-interns across the country and provided a collaborative, supportive environment to learn or reinforce content relevant to ACGME/CREOG Milestone Level One.

In 2021, the #OBGynInternChallenge was bigger and better, with a directed text message (SMS) curriculum involving reflective and multiple choice questions, infographics, and podcasts, as well as opportunities to engage with us and other participants over social media. Over 70% of OB/GYN residents across the country signed up of their own volition through social media. Over 60% of residents participated again in 2022, cementing the Challenge as part of the learning landscape for new residents.

Our goal is to share and inform the transition to residency from the perspective of new residents, using research that we share on a regular basis. We plan to continue our goal to provide a high-quality, free, and useful educational resource while also providing research insights to improve the MS4 to PGY-1 transition.

Ultimately, our goal is to help students recognize what knowledge they need to start residency, and to give PDs tools to create individual learning plans for their new residents.

are my future residents / former students required to participate?

Participation is entirely voluntary. After verifying eligibility, we will ask participants to complete a pre-intervention survey and knowledge assessment. After the curriculum is complete, we’ll ask participants to complete an immediate post-intervention survey. Later on in the PGY-1 year, we’ll ask participants to complete one more survey.

All surveys are completely anonymous, as are the knowledge assessments.

what will it cost?

Participation in all aspects of the curriculum is free for all eligible rising PGY-1s! The educational technology making this possible is provided by the efforts of the study team and their sponsoring institutions. In 2024, we have again paired with Rosh Review to continue to offer the Challenge freely to new interns across the country.

CAN MY STUDENTS / RESIDENTS STILL PARTICIPATE IN OUR OWN CURRICULUM / BOOT CAMP?

Yes! We do not discourage participants’ participation in these courses at all. We will ask participants about whether they participated in such preparatory courses in our surveys.
